Mexican Hearts

“Mexican Hearts, California Dreams” (Sept. 27) is all heartbreak to the unfortunate Mexicans and caring Americans. Author Alan Weisman’s report illustrates once again how important cheap labor is to profits--and much more important than concern for human needs. What’s disturbing is that the idea that “cheap labor equals greater profits” has led also to Americans losing jobs to Asiatic and Third World countries, endangers our own economy and finds the United States on the brink of being toppled by a super-power.

And yet, our society seems content to allow this drift, bemused by a growing rage among the homeless, poor and unemployed and unable to move politicians to legislate whatever changes it will take to build an environment to provide opportunity and economic justice for all who wish to better themselves.
