Spring Specials Highlight Historic Yugoslavia, Major Central European Cities

Two leading tour operators featuring Yugoslavia and nearby Central European capitals are offering early spring specials for mature travelers.

Yugotours, which promotes its Prime of Your Life programs, has extended its attractive series of packages through March 31. Its basic package is a two-week sojourn that includes the historic coastal cities of Dubrovnik and Opatija, with two meals daily, four-star hotels, transfers and luggage handling and round-trip air fare from Los Angeles for $1,183 per person.

Low-priced add-ons in Dubrovnik, depending on hotel selections, are from $164 to $255 for seven nights, including breakfast and dinner. Stays may be booked at other Adriatic resort port cities such as Hvar, Rovinj, Makarska and Herceg Novi. Bonus activities are included with all packages.

Mini-holiday extensions from Yugoslavia for four days/three nights are available to Rome, Athens, Budapest, Istanbul and Prague, with prices from $368 to $438 per person, including round-trip air transportation from Yugoslavia, first-class hotels, continental breakfast daily, transfers and half-day sightseeing tours.

Popular Package

Another tour operator specializing in travel to Yugoslavia and nearby countries is Love Holidays. One of its most popular packages is called “Highlights of Yugoslavia,” which includes stays in Dubrovnik (six nights) and Opatija (five nights), one night in Zagreb and one night in the ancient city of Split, a midway stop on a two-day motor-coach tour along the Dalmatian coast. Two meals are included each day.

Scenic day tours originating from Dubrovnik and Opatija get you back to your hotel in ample time for relaxation and dinner. Prices for the complete package begin at $1,178, including round-trip air fare from Los Angeles via Pan American Airways.

Among the add-ons to major Central European cities are six-day extensions to Vienna and Budapest, Athens and the Soviet Union from $348 to $748. As with the basic package, prices will vary according to departure date. Prices quoted are per person, double occupancy.

The Hungarian People’s Republic has stepped up its efforts to attract the American mature traveler by emphasizing the many spas and health resorts in Hungary.

A new brochure, “Great Health Resorts of Hungary,” describes several of the major thermal spas that offer treatment for the relief of an array of afflictions, including arthritis, rheumatism, lumbago, tuberculosis, digestive disorders and other ailments.

Hungary’s spas, which were developed during the Roman Empire, are pleasure resorts as well as a place to pursue body fitness. Health resorts in Hungary are either in the capital of Budapest or in villages in the countryside.

Most health packages include full board (three meals daily), a medical examination upon arrival and at departure, a dietary plan if desired, a physical therapy program, medical hostess service and use of thermal baths, saunas and other special equipment and facilities.

All spas are near scenic attractions and offer cultural programs and activities. The recommended stay is three weeks, although one- and two-week programs are available.

Country Spas

Package rates will vary with the length of stay and the time of year. Rates for one week with half-board (two meals daily) costs $158 per person in one of the country spas, up to $390 per person in Budapest. Special rates for a three-week package at the two-week price are offered during certain time periods, including full board (three meals). Prices quoted do not include transportation to Hungary.

Other moderately priced packages in Hungary, not necessarily health related, may be booked as add-ons to a European trip. Examples are Theater in Budapest, which includes four days/three nights at the Budapest Hilton, daily breakfast, one dinner, ticket to the opera and a half-day city tour for $193 per person.

One of Hungary’s best buys is its Blue Danube Holiday, which offers round-trip air transportation from any city in Europe served by Malev Airlines to Budapest, with seven days/six nights, plus breakfast, from $299 per person up to $496, depending on hotel category. Some hotels serve a full American breakfast, while others are continental.
