Bass Lake, Calif.’s economy is booming and it’s got nothing to do with fish. A soon-to-be-filmed comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy produced a small job boom in the eastern Sierra Nevada region. Brian Wilkinson, a Madera County Industrial Development commissioner, said Universal Studios is hiring 2,400 extras at $40 a day each from the foothill communities surrounding Bass Lake, where the movie about two vacationing brothers-in-law begins filming Oct. 26. Wilkinson estimates that Universal has already has spent $250,000 on food and lodging preparing for the film project’s 130-140 cast members.
