The State : She’s Queen for the Day
A 73-year-old grandmother, who graduated from Humboldt State University during the Great Depression, was crowned homecoming queen during ceremonies on the Arcata campus. “Better late than never,” Kathryne Haley Murray said when she received her tiara, bouquet of yellow roses and scroll. The university stopped selecting contemporary students as homecoming king and queen several years ago and bestows the honor on former students selected by the alumni board. “The young students on campus, they feel funny about picking one of their own as king and queen,” explained Brian Dangerfield of the school’s athletic department. “The older people, they love it.” Murray, who lives in Eureka, has three daughters and eight grandchildren. Unfortunately for Murray and homecoming king Everett H. Watkins, the Lumberjacks lost the homecoming game, 30-28, to St. Mary’s College of Moraga.
