NHL Roundup : Flyers Turn Back Penguins Again at Spectrum
Dave Brown of the Philadelphia Flyers is known for his penalties. It’s the Pittsburgh Penguins who seem to bring out the scorer in him.
Brown broke a 2-2 tie when he grabbed a rebound of his own missed shot and fired the puck past Pittsburgh goalie Frank Pietrangelo with 8:36 to play Sunday night as the Flyers beat the Penguins, 3-2, in Philadelphia.
Since beating the Flyers on Jan. 20, 1974, the Penguins have gone 0-35-3 in 38 regular-season games at the Spectrum.
The goal was Brown’s first of the season and the first game-winner of his career. It was only the 22nd goal he has scored since joining the National Hockey League in 1982.
His last regular-season goal also came against the Penguins, last March 22 at the Spectrum.
“I hoped it would happen soon,” Brown said. “I felt I was handling the puck well.”
Brown has led the Flyers in penalty minutes for the past three years, and critics have branded him unproductive.
“I felt I have improved as a hockey player,” Brown said. “I don’t worry about my critics that much and what the papers say. . . . I just try to play the hardest that I can.”
Pittsburgh had tied the game in the last minute of the second period, when Scott Simpson lifted a wrist shot over the glove hand of Flyers goalie Wendell Young.
Boston 6, Calgary 5--Rookie Bob Sweeney scored 2 minutes 27 seconds into overtime as the Bruins beat the Flames in Calgary, Canada.
The goal capped a big comeback by the Bruins, who faced a 5-3 deficit entering the third period.
Sweeney skated through the crease after his shot was stopped by goaltender Mike Vernon and fired the rebound into the net off Vernon, who lay flat on the ice.
Rookie center Joe Nieuwendyk recorded his first NHL hat trick for the Flames.
Cam Neely’s sixth goal of the season tied the score 5-5 at 18:06 of the third period. Neely skated around defenseman Brad McCrimmon and beat Vernon with a backhand shot to the stick side.
Vernon handled 39 shots, while Boston’s Doug Keans faced 30.
Chicago 6, Winnipeg 4--Rick Vaive scored two goals, and goalie Darren Pang stopped 39 shots in notching his first career win as the Blackhawks handed the Jets their first loss of the season at Chicago.
The Blackhawks, who have won four straight after starting the season with two losses, took over sole possession of first place from idle Detroit and Toronto in the Norris Division. Winnipeg entered the game as the league’s only unbeaten team at 3-0.
