Redskins Play the Cowboys in Strikeball Finale

Wide receiver Kelvin Edwards of the Dallas Cowboys is a perfect example of how the NFL strike has helped some players make an impression.

He should be a major offensive threat when Dallas (3-1) meets the Washington Redskins (3-1) in an NFC East Division showdown tonight in Texas Stadium.

A month ago, Edwards was a free agent without a home and a job.

Edwards, a fourth-round draft pick by New Orleans in 1986, has caught 8 passes for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns during 2 strike games.

“He’s fast, has great hands and is an excellent target with his 6-3 height,” Dallas Coach Tom Landry said. “He’s been a big surprise.

“We’re glad the Saints let Edwards go. He has a good future if he keeps playing like he has. He’s been just great. Now let’s see if he can do it again.”

Edwards isn’t going to get his hopes up until he hears it from Landry that he has made the team.

“If they decide they want to keep me, I’d be glad to stay here,” Edwards said.

“I wouldn’t say I’ve earned a spot yet. I can’t say I’m on this team or anything like that. I’m working hard to be on the team. It would just be unbelievable to be a part of the tradition that they have here.”

Edwards has teamed with rookie quarterback Kevin Sweeney as the Cowboys have put together one of the better strike teams. Sweeney has completed 14 of 28 passes for 291 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Washington will have no veteran players, while Dallas will have three on offense, including running back Tony Dorsett and quarterback Danny White, and four on defense, including lineman Randy White.
