Emperor Hirohito received a fourth blood transfusion at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to speed his recovery from surgery four weeks ago to bypass an intestinal obstruction, the Imperial Household Agency reported. A blood test showed that the 86-year-old emperor has recovered to “almost normal” in the amount of hemoglobin in his blood, but another transfusion is planned for Wednesday, an agency official said. Doctors gave him the transfusion after discovering a slight decline in his hemoglobin count.
