Trial Ordered in Newsman’s Death
A 20-year-old Glendale woman was ordered to stand trial for her alleged involvement in the February, 1986, killing of a Filipino-American newspaper executive.
Glendale Municipal Judge Barbara Lee Burke ruled after a preliminary hearing Thursday that there is sufficient evidence to try Teressa Kay Deburger for being an accessory after the fact in the shooting death of Oscar Salvatierra, 41, of Glendale. Salvatierra was the Los Angeles bureau chief of the San Francisco-based Philippine News.
Salvatierra’s son, Arnel, 19, is to stand trial next month for murder. Arnel Salvatierra, Deburger’s boyfriend, is accused of killing his father and disguising the crime as a political assassination.
Deburger is accused of helping in the alleged cover-up.
The killing attracted international attention after some officials and politicians speculated that supporters of then-recently ousted Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos assassinated Salvatierra.
If convicted, Deburger could be sentenced to a maximum of three years in state prison. She is scheduled for trial Oct. 30 in Pasadena Superior Court.
