NHL Roundup : Without His Sidekick, Trottier Scores Hat Trick for Islanders

For more than a decade, the best one-two offensive punch in hockey was Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier.

They led the New York Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships to open the ‘80s and have bedeviled goaltenders from coast to coast.

Bossy was primarily the scorer and Trottier the playmaker.

What goaltenders couldn’t do, injury has done. With Bossy sitting out the season because of back and other injuries, the one-two punch has been broken up, at least temporarily.

Without his buddy, Trottier is going it alone as the leader of the Islanders. He’s doing a pretty good job of it.

Trottier scored three goals Tuesday night at Uniondale, N.Y., to lead the Islanders to a 5-4 victory over the Calgary Flames.

It was the 16th hat trick for the 13-year center and the goal that completed it broke a 3-3 tie with 7:19 to play. The three goals moved Trottier into a tie with Bobby Clarke for 13th place on the all-time NHL scoring list with 1,210 points. He has 445 goals.

St. Louis 6, Winnipeg 2--Left wing Gino Cavallini scored two goals at St. Louis as the Blues became the last team in the NHL to win a game this season. With the World Series being played in St. Louis, this game drew only 8,619 fans, about half the usual turnout.
