Los Angeles Schools Consider Pros, Cons of Year-Round Schedules
Consider the irony:
For years we teachers have been complaining about too little respect and too little pay. But the National Endowment for the Humanities has come to our aid, creating summer seminars and grants that increase not only teachers’ self-esteem but also our bank accounts. I, for example, was fortunate enough to have been accepted to a seminar at UC Berkeley in 1984 and for an independent study grant in 1986.
Now comes the Los Angeles School Board considering whether to put the entire district on a year-round program running through most of the summer. And all the good intentions of the NEH--not to mention the morale of teachers seeking to benefit academically or financially during their summer layoff--are ignored.
