THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST

Thanks to Calendar for the various articles about the years of the blacklist, the House Committee on Un-American Activities and the lingering aftermath of that era (“The Blacklist Legacy,” by Judith Michaelson; “Impenitent Retrospective,” by Ring Lardner Jr.; “ ‘Blacklist’ Focuses on Families,” by Nancy Mills, Oct. 18).

As someone who grew up in Hollywood in the ‘50s, whose father was investigated, and knowing others whose names were named, it is important to me that the reality of that period be remembered. That the truth be taught to those who came later is imperative.

However, the perspective of the lesson needs to be broadened. The pain of that era and its disgrace spread throughout the country; by no means was it limited to Hollywood. Teachers, lawyers, public officials, trade unionists and countless others across the spectrum of activity and employment were subjected to the same vile injustice of the Committee and the hysterical climate of that time.

These other nameless victims of HUAC’s inquisition, far more numerous than those affected in Hollywood, must not be forgotten. It was a dark and frightening time affecting the entire fabric of our country. It is important that we honor and remember all who suffered through it.
