L.B.: A Champion Run by Stooges

Share

The top two Long Beach stories (in the Southeast / Long Beach sections, Oct. 15) sadly sum up why the city is like a championship caliber thoroughbred owned and operated by the Three Stooges (no disrespect intended for Moe, Larry and Curly).

We begin with the story that professional real estate developer/mayor Ernie Kell is pushing to build and develop right on top of the town’s most outstanding environmental resource. Of course a nature preserve must look quite different to a sophisticated off-road dirt-racer like Mayor Ernie. He provides the kind of strong, quality leadership that made the phrase “hick town” a household word.

Next up is the tale of the City Council redrawing the map to accommodate Councilman Edd Tuttle, who wasn’t smart enough to move into his own district.

This would all be very funny if it were in its proper place on the pages of National Lampoon, but to have to read it in The Times leaves a bad taste in the back of my throat. The lack of outrage by my fellow citizens in town is also all the evidence necessary to prove this is a spineless, wimp of a town, more than satisfied to let the Lilliputians run the show while we’re away at work.

At least the weather’s nice.
