The Big Three networks may let a bit more sex and profanity go by than they did 20 years ago. But Tom and Dick Smothers--whose CBS show was booted from prime time in 1968 because the political satire was deemed too sharp--say the networks are just as sensitive to political laughs as they were 20 years ago. “We couldn’t get any of that stuff on the air today,” Tom told the New York Daily News. “We’d still get censored, still get criticized, still have the networks chop out sections of our shows or forbid us to tape others. That’s the way it is with the networks--they just don’t want to touch political issues.”
