Virginia Tech’s basketball team cannot play in postseason tournaments for two years, and the football team will have its scholarships cut back under sanctions imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Assn.

“These sanctions are harsh, in keeping with the serious nature of the violations,” Raymond Smoot, the interim athletic director, said in a statement released by the university in Blacksburg, Va.

The NCAA publicly reprimanded and censured Virginia Tech for recruiting violations under former football coach Bill Dooley and violations including academic favors and gifts to athletes under former basketball coach Charles Moir.
