Bob Hope Says He’ll Aid Memorial Again

Entertainer Bob Hope, who headlined a poorly attended show, the proceeds of which were to help finance a war veterans’ memorial in Burbank, has agreed to finance a fund-raising dinner to help pay for the memorial, Mayor Michael R. Hastings announced Tuesday night.

The Sept. 27 benefit for the memorial, which attracted only 1,500 people to the Burbank Starlight Amphitheater, lost money. Councilwoman Mary Lou Howard said at the benefit that Hope was apparently not popular enough to attract a large crowd to the event.

Hastings said at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting that Hope was distressed when he learned that the show had a $19,000 deficit. Hastings said Hope asked him to arrange for a committee to set up a fund-raiser Feb. 8 at the Lakeside Country Club in Toluca Lake.

The fund-raiser will be a $100-a-plate dinner, Hastings said. The banquet room at the country club seats about 360 people, he said.

Hastings said Hope agreed to pay the $7,000 to $8,000 necessary to put on the dinner.
