STATWATCH : Redell Nimbly Performs Quarterback Shuffle

Share

It happened in the blink of an eye--so fast, in fact, that everyone missed it. Well, almost everyone.

With seconds left in the first half and the team moving toward another score, Crespi senior quarterback Rob O’Byrne threw a pass that was nearly intercepted in the end zone. Coach Bill Redell, angered by the near turnover, pulled O’Byrne and inserted junior backup Ron Redell, his son.

Seconds later, Redell connected with receiver Eric Kieling for a four-yard touchdown pass that nearly everyone thought O’Byrne had thrown.

“Everybody missed it,” said Bill Redell, who called newspapers in an attempt to clarify the situation. “Everybody but his mom, anyway.”

Ron Redell doubled his season touchdown total in the game when he later connected with tight end Quinn Fauria for a 19-yard scoring strike. Redell has four touchdown passes, equaling O’Byrne’s output.

Scoring: Crespi tailback Russell White, who has scored 10 touchdowns in two weeks, is third in the state in scoring with 24 touchdowns and 144 points, according to Cal-Hi Sports of Sacramento. The state’s top three scorers are from Southern California. Santa Monica’s Glyn Milburn is first with 26 touchdowns and 156 points, and Sean Cheatham of Rancho Alamitos is second with 21 touchdowns and 11 two-point conversion for 148 points.

Rushing: Tony Kerr of Simi Valley set school records for most yards in a game and longest run from scrimmage in a 28-6 win over Newbury Park. The senior running back rushed for 240 yards, bettering Brian Schwartz’s 230 yards in 1975 against Thousand Oaks. Kerr, who is also close to breaking season and career rushing records at Simi Valley, had a 98-yard run from scrimmage, breaking Willie Rosborough’s 9-year-old record of 91 yards against Palmdale in 1978. Schwartz attended Ohio State, and Rosborough played at Washington. . . . Agoura quarterback Sean McCune fattened his statistics in a win over Calabasas. In the previous six games, McCune had gained 162 yards on 36 carries and scored 1 touchdown. Against Calabasas, McCune rushed 6 times for 167 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. . . . Reseda had given up only 152 yards rushing in its first four games, but against Sylmar the Regents allowed 156 yards, including Jerome Casey’s 75-yard touchdown run.

Passing: Quarterbacks Bob Grandpre of Westlake and Steve Sisco of Thousand Oaks each completed one pass in their respective wins over Royal and Granada Hills and both throws went for touchdowns during games on a soggy field at Thousand Oaks. Grandpre threw 18 yards to Garret Messner in Westlake’s 31-14 win over Royal. Sisco’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Ward was the biggest play in the Lancers’ 21-12 upset of Granada Hills. . . . Granada Hills quarterback Jeremy Leach was intercepted three times by Thousand Oaks. He has five interceptions this season, equaling last season’s total when he threw 198 passes.

The starting quarterbacks for the five Pac 8 League teams in the Valley completed a combined 14 of 52 passes for 175 yards Friday. Darren Renfro of Foothill League-leading Hart, alone completed 15 of 21 passes for 251 yards.

Receiving: For the second consecutive week, Gil Valencia caught every pass Camarillo quarterbacks completed. The senior receiver had 6 receptions for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns against Channel Islands and 6 receptions for 95 yards and 3 touchdowns against El Camino Real. Valencia leads the Marmonte League with 27 catches and shares the league lead with six interceptions. . . . After catching seven passes in the first four games of the season, Fred Bryant of Van Nuys equaled that total in the Wolves’ 38-20 loss to Canoga Park. Bryant had 7 receptions for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns. He has 14 receptions for 310 yards (22.1 average) and 3 touchdowns this season.

Interceptions: Canyon had not intercepted a pass this season entering its game against Burroughs of Ridgecrest. But four Cowboys--Steve Martinez, Curt Gibson, Justin Fix and Jeff Barbosa--picked off passes in a 49-7 win.

Offense: Not only does North Hollywood have Chip Grant, the leading rusher in the Pac 8 League with 1,042 yards, but the Huskies also have the top quarterback in the league. James Crump has passed for a modest 342 yards in 5 games, 43 more than Poly’s Armando Urquidez.
