Elected Officials and Development

Share

During the past 10 months I have had the opportunity to observe the San Gabriel City Council “up close and personal” relative to development activities. I am amazed at the degree of insensitivity displayed toward residents by the City Council, city attorney and city manager.

As a participant-observer in these meetings, I cannot help but conclude that the council, city attorney and city manager constitute an oligarchy--government by the few.

We have developers on the council and the Planning Commission, as well as a developer mentality.

I suggest that we limit council terms to two consecutive terms, or eight years. Such terms presently apply to the President of the United States and the City Council of Arcadia.

Citizens everywhere must be ever mindful that we cannot afford to put our fate in the hands of elected officials and then go to sleep. It has been said that “the sun wrinkles the skin and apathy wrinkles the heart.” Is it not true, then, that the price of liberty is eternal vigilance?
