Four prison guards accused of throwing cats into a closed room with a pit bull dog have been transferred and their pay reduced, the state Department of Corrections said. A spokesman said the incidents occurred over four months in 1985 at the Chamberlain Creek Conservation Camp in Mendocino County. A spokesman said 50 to 60 cats were thrown into the room one at a time. There will be no criminal prosecution because the statute of limitations has expired, the spokesman said. The guards plan to appeal. The prison facility houses inmates who work on fire crews and conservation projects.
