FALL HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Blanks Bakersfield; Kirk Breaks Scoring Mark

Cal State Northridge defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 8-0, Wednesday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. soccer match at North Campus Stadium.

CSUN (14-1-1, 6-0-1) was led by forward Joey Kirk, who had three goals and two assists, and midfielder Rodney Batt, who had four goals and an assist.

Kirk’s performance gives him 59 points this season, breaking CSUN’s single-season record of 58, set by Jose Perez in 1983. The senior forward from Granada Hills has scored 24 goals this season, one shy of Perez’s record, which also was set in 1983.

Bakersfield (4-13-1, 0-6-1) hasn’t won a conference game in six years and has lost 18 straight to CSUN, which is ranked No 1 in Division II.

The Matadors, who play host to Chapman on Sunday at 6 p.m., are tied for the conference lead with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

WATER POLO

Valley 12, Pierce 9--Freshman Josh Foster scored five goals to pace the Monarchs in the nonconference match at Valley.

Foster and John Marshall, who scored two goals against Pierce, have 51 goals going into Valley’s Southern California Conference final against Rio Hondo on Friday. Rick Harway added two goals and goalie Pat Malcolm had 11 saves for Valley.

Valley (11-8) is in sole possession of first place in the SCC with a 4-1 conference record. The Monarchs can wrap up the conference championship by defeating Rio Hondo.

Royal 28, Simi Valley 1--Led by Mike Onoye’s six goals, Royal clinched its seventh consecutive Marmonte League title.

Jim Robinson and Gary Smith each had five goals for Royal (14-8, 8-0).

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY

Maranatha 33, Village Christian 43, L.A. Baptist 52--Dave Wester finished first overall to lead Maranatha in the Alpha League cross-country championships at O’Melveny Park.

Maranatha’s victory snapped a three-way tie for first in league.

L.A. Baptist had three runners finish in the top 10.

GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY

Maranatha 20, L.A. Baptist 59, Western Christian 79--Maranatha place four runners in the top five in the Alpha League cross-country championships.

Western Christian’s Karen Talemantes finished first in 19:35 over the three-mile course. Maranatha’s Miriam Cordero (20:01) placed second followed by teammates Tacey Earle (20:28) in third, Debbie Lewis (20:45) fourth and Frankie Rivera (21:15) fifth.

COLLEGE WRESTLING

Moorpark 24, Cuesta 18--Ed Meyer scored a decision in the 177-pound division to secure Moorpark’s win in the Western State Conference match.

The Raiders’ Keith Hernandez (118) and Ross Boomhower (190) pinned their opponents. Heavyweight Vince Plymire also scored a pin for Moorpark (6-3, 1-1).

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Louisville d. Alemany, 15-8, 15-11, 16-14--Becky Long and Mary Hudson each had six kills as Louisville clinched the San Fernando Valley League with a 10-0 record. Mary Beth Giordano added five kills for Louisville (11-3).

Notre Dame d. Bell-Jeff, 7-15, 15-6, 15-10, 15-3--Laurie Jones and Dana Marasca each had nine kills to lead Notre Dame in the San Fernando Valley League match.

Notre Dame (8-7, 5-5) qualified for next week’s playoffs by finishing third in league.

GIRLS TENNIS

Chaminade 68, Indio 58--Led by top singles player Abigail Villena, Chaminade’s improved its overall record to 13-2 with the nonleague win at the Studio City Racquet Center.
