Mission Viejo’s Cityhood Vote
This Tuesday, Mission Viejo’s voters will have an opportunity to shape the future of the community for years to come. Measure M, the cityhood question, is perhaps the most important decision which has ever faced our community. If prior experience is to be repeated, the question will be decided by a very small percentage of registered voters.
We voters must face the fact that another level of government will be created. We voters must realize that the “windfall” of tax-dollars that the pro-city group claims will flow our way will still come from the taxpayers.
The projected expenses are but a fraction of that actually experienced by other Orange County cities of similar size. Have we really been given all the facts we need to make an informed decision?
We voters must understand that there are sufficient unanswered questions to warrant sending this matter back for further study. Ultimately, Mission Viejo may become a city, but it should not be based upon hastily conceived studies. Let’s say no this time so we can decide Mission Viejo’s future in a calm, well thought out manner.
