COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Iowa Hands Indiana First Big Ten Defeat : Hawkeyes Upset No. 11 Hoosiers, 29-21, to Spoil Unbeaten Conference Season

Iowa Coach Hayden Fry said his team made a lot of Big Ten friends Saturday by knocking off conference-leading Indiana.

“I’d imagine that every team in the Big Ten loves the Hawks today,” Fry said after the Hawkeyes spoiled Indiana’s undefeated conference season with a 29-21 victory. “They opened a lot of doors for a lot of people.”

Junior quarterback Chuck Hart- lieb guided an 86-yard drive, capped by fullback David Hudson’s 1-yard dive in the fourth quarter, that put Iowa ahead of 11th-ranked Indiana for good.

“That’s the thing about this league,” said Indiana Coach Bill Mallory, whose team defeated Michigan and Ohio State earlier in the year. “Everybody’s pretty darn good. It makes it good for the public, but tough on the coaches.”

The Hoosiers trailed, 20-7, at halftime, but quarterback Dave Kramme came off the bench to pass and scramble the Hoosiers to a 21-20 lead.

He completed eight straight passes on two touchdown drives, but threw late interceptions to Iowa defensive backs Dwight Sistrunk and Kerry Burt to end threats.

Said Mallory: “In the third quarter, we came back and did well the things that we were doing. Then in the fourth quarter, we didn’t make the big plays and Iowa did. That’s the difference in a game like this.”

It was the first loss in five conference games this season for Indiana, 6-2 overall. Iowa, 6-3 overall, is 3-2 in the Big Ten.

Fry said he was the happiest he’s been all year.

“Sure, we have won some good games, but this is the best,” he said. “They were doing the hokey-pokey in the dressing room. That’s when I knew that we did good.”

Starting from Iowa’s 14 on the go-ahead drive, Hartlieb completed 5 of 6 passes, including a 23-yarder to tight end Mike Flagg to the 1-yard line, setting up Hudson’s touchdown that gave Iowa a 26-21 lead. A two-point conversion try failed.

Hudson was Iowa’s leading rusher with 18 carries for 60 yards.

Hartlieb, coming off back-to-back 300-yard games, was 19 of 27 passing for 271 yards with no interceptions.

He hit Iowa’s three tight ends--Flagg, Marv Cook and Craig Clark--for a total of 160 yards. Flagg had three receptions for 57 yards, Cook had four catches for 94 yards and Clark had one catch for 10 yards.

Rob Houghtlin kicked a 28-yard field goal with 1:57 left to make it 29-21. Houghtlin set a school career record for field goals at 48 with 3 on Saturday.

Kramme was 11 of 20 for 157 yards in the game after replacing starter Dave Schnell late in the first half.

Iowa had 445 yards in total offense to Indiana’s 305.
