COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Pacific 10 Roundup : Cal Picks Off Ducks at Pass

Linebacker David Ortega intercepted three Oregon passes Saturday as California’s surprisingly tough defense led the Bears to a 20-6 victory over the Ducks in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Eugene, Ore.

Another linebacker, DeWayne Odom, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble for the Bears, who held the Ducks to just five yards rushing as Cal picked up its first conference victory of the season.

Oregon quarterbacks threw five interceptions and were sacked seven times as the Ducks lost their third Pac-10 game in a row to drop to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Starting Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave and backup Pete Nelson both left the game with injuries.

California (2-5-1 and 1-2-1) never trailed after going 58 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown on its second possession. Troy Taylor threw seven yards to Todd Powers for the score.

With 6:57 to play in the first half, Cal’s Chris Richards scored on a two-yard run to make it 14-3. Two turnovers by Musgrave, one an interception and another a fumble, set up second-quarter field goals of 33 and 36 yards by Robbie Keen to give Cal a 20-3 halftime lead.

Musgrave played only briefly in the second half after suffering a thigh contusion. Nelson threw three interceptions and fumbled the ball away once before leaving the game with a back injury. Starting flanker Tony Hargain finished the game at quarterback.

Arizona 23, Stanford 13--Chuck Cecil intercepted four passes, tying two Pac-10 records, to help the Wildcats post a come-from-behind victory at Stanford.

Arizona quarterback Ronald Veals ran 3 yards for a touchdown and passed 22 yards to Darryl Lewis for another, with Cecil’s 40-yard interception return setting up the second touchdown. It came in the third quarter and gave the Wildcats a 20-10 lead.

Cecil, a senior safety, tied a single-game conference record with his four interceptions. The final one came on the last play of the game, and gave him a conference record-equaling 20 for his career.

Arizona improved to 4-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Pac-10. Stanford is 3-5 and 2-3.

Washington 28, Oregon St. 12--Tony Covington scored two first-half touchdowns and freshman Greg Lewis ran 10 yards for a key score in the final quarter as the Huskies (5-3, 3-2) won at Seattle.

The Beavers (2-6, 0-4) lost their top two quarterbacks, junior Erik Wilhelm and sophomore Mark Bennett, with injuries. Kent Riddle, a freshman walk-on from Iowa City, Iowa, wound up directing the Beavers in the final quarter.

Wilhelm left the game midway through the second quarter after being hurt on a quarterback keeper.
