COLLEGE FOOTBALL : South Roundup : Walsh Passes Miami to a 41-3 Win

Steve Walsh was concerned that third-ranked Miami’s game with East Carolina would be close. But he took care of that worry himself.

Walsh passed for 212 yards and 3 touchdowns at Greenville, N.C., as the unbeaten Hurricanes overcame early mistakes and blew past the Pirates, 41-3.

Walsh, who completed 16 of 26 passes, connected with Brian Blades on touchdown passes of 5 and 9 yards and passed to Leonard Conley for a 4-yard score.

Although the Miami defense stiffened in the second half, Walsh did his own damage in leading the Hurricanes to two second-half touchdowns that enabled them to break away from a 14-3 halftime lead.

Miami (6-0) returns home to play its next five games with an eye on another unbeaten regular season. The Hurricanes have won 27 straight regular-season games, the best such record in the nation.

East Carolina dropped to 4-5.

Clemson 31, Wake Forest 17--At Clemson, S.C., third-string tailback Joe Henderson scored on runs of 31 and 48 yards in the fourth quarter and had a career-high 131 yards in 20 carries as the No. 14 Tigers rallied to beat the Demon Deacons.

Clemson trailed, 17-10, at the half but tied the game on Terry Allen’s 5-yard run that ended a 13-play, 65-yard drive with 7:40 left in the third period.

The Tigers then took the lead on a 90-yard, 9-play drive that ended when Henderson broke three tackles on a 31-yard touchdown run with 12:24 left.

The victory leaves the Tigers, 7-1 overall, alone atop the Atlantic Coast Conference at 4-1. Wake Forest is 5-3 and 2-3.

North Carolina 27, Maryland 14--Mark Maye, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 171 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes to Eric Lewis, and Norris Davis returned a blocked punt 26 yards for another score at College Park, Md., to lead the Tar Heels to an ACC victory.

North Carolina is 5-3 overall, 3-1 in the ACC. The Terrapins are 4-4 and 3-2.

S. Carolina 48, N. Carolina St. 0--At Columbia, S.C., the Gamecocks (6-2), who had 398 yards in total offense, limited the Wolfpack (3-5) to minus-13 yards rushing and 49 yards passing. The Wolfpack, which stunned Clemson, 30-28, last week, did not manage a first down in the second half.

Todd Ellis, South Carolina’s quarterback who was fourth in the nation in total offense with 302 yards per game, completed 14 of 27 passes for 183 yards, his lowest total this year.

Sterling Sharpe, the Gamecocks’ star wide receiver, had 8 catches for 118 yards.

Duke 48, Georgia Tech 14--Steve Slayden threw for a career-high 396 yards and an ACC-record 6 touchdowns at Durham, N.C., as the Blue Devils snapped a four-game losing streak.

It was the first conference victory after three losses for Duke (4-4). The Yellow Jackets dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Slayden completed 31 of 50 passes, and Clarkston Hines caught 3 touchdown passes of 9, 32 and 2 yards.

The old ACC record of five touchdown passes was shared by South Carolina’s Tommy Suggs, against Virginia in 1968, and North Carolina’s Kevin Anthony, against Wake Forest in 1985.

Roger Boone finished with 12 receptions for 169 yards for the Blue Devils.

Darrell Gast, making only his third start for Georgia Tech, completed 24 of 49 passes for a school-record 416 yards.
