With the win, Portland State (7-1-1 overall, 4-0 in conference), ranked seventh in Division II, took sole possession of first place because of Santa Clara’s loss to Northridge, while virtually knocking Cal Poly (6-2 overall, 2-2 in conference) out of contention. It was the Mustangs’ second straight loss after opening the season with six straight wins.

CS Northridge 7, Santa Clara 6--The Matadors turned back a two-point conversion attempt by the Broncos with 26 seconds left to preserve the WFC win at Northridge.

The Matadors’ only touchdown came on an 85-yard kickoff return by Albert Fann to open the third quarter. They held the 7-0 lead until Paul Marcy scored on a two-yard run with 26 seconds left.

Santa Clara went for the tie, but Tobin Douglas, who had already missed four field goals, missed wide left on the extra point. But a penalty against Northridge gave Santa Clara another chance, and the Broncos went for the win. But Matt Shaw was dropped for a two-yard loss to seal the victory for Northridge.

Northridge and Santa Clara are tied for second in the WFC with 3-1 records. Both schools are 6-2 overall.
