The Phoenix Suns placed free-agent center Ozell Jones on waivers to reduce their National Basketball Assn. roster to 16 players, four over the league limit.

Jones, a 6-foot 11-inch, 235-pound center from Cal State Fullerton, played sparingly in five preseason games for Phoenix. He was signed last summer after playing in the Continental Basketball Assn. under new Suns assistant coach Herb Brown.

“We liked some of the things Ozell did last summer, so we kept him this long to take a good look at him,” Phoenix Coach John Wetzel said. “But he seemed to reach a certain level and then just kind of stopped.”

Wetzel said free-agent Jeff Cook appears to have won the backup center role for Suns veteran James Edwards.
