The body of a 42-year-old man--his 20-month-old son asleep next to it--was found at the check-cashing business the victim owned in San Diego, police reported Sunday.

The victim was identified as Stephen Edward Schaefer of La Mesa, who owned the Money Express check-cashing company in the 4200 block of El Cajon Boulevard.

Police Department spokesman Rick Carlson said police were notified of the killing at 3 a.m. Sunday by the business’ assistant manager, who discovered the body, which had been beaten and shot.

Schaefer was last seen alive when he left his home Saturday morning with his son, Carlson said.

The motive for the killing is unknown but robbery is possible, Carlson added.

Missing at the scene was Schaefer’s lime green 1977 Datsun B-210 hatchback, license 2FET655. Carlson said anyone seen driving the vehicle should be considered armed and dangerous and be reported to police.
