A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded one of two pit bulls that charged at him Sunday in Pico Rivera, authorities said.

Deputy Victor Naranjo was called to the 8400 block of Dalebury Drive about 2 a.m. to investigate reports of pit bulls running loose, Deputy Detta Roberts said. The dogs ran toward Naranjo while he was talking to a resident who had complained about the dogs, Roberts said. Naranjo fired one shot from his shotgun, injuring the lead pit bull, hitting it in the chest and leg, Roberts said. The other dog ran off, apparently uninjured.

The injured pit bull was taken to a Los Angeles County animal shelter for treatment. Animal control workers were investigating the incident.
