Tennis Roundup : Bothered by Tendinitis, Gomez Loses at Paris

Ecuador’s Andres Gomez, a large ice bag on his left shoulder, had just lost to the world’s 160th-ranked player at Paris and it was more than tendinitis that was making him sore.

The world’s No. 11-ranked player suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat Monday to France’s Thierry Champion in the first round of the $815,000 Paris Open in which he was seeded fourth.

“I don’t feel 100% to play a tournament but there are rules that you have to play a certain number of times,” Gomez said. “I don’t feel good.”

Gomez has been bothered by the tendinitis for years and said it has been getting worse since playing six weeks ago in Geneva. He withdrew from last week’s Hong Kong Grand Prix tournament because of the shoulder problem.

In other first-round matches, David Pate lost to Argentina’s Eduardo Bengoechea, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, while Israel’s Amos Mansdorf defeated Scott Davis, 6-3, 6-3, and Tim Mayotte beat Israel’s Gilad Bloom, 6-1, 7-5.

Jimmy Arias returned after the longest layoff of his career and defeated Derrick Rostagno, 7-6, 6-3, in the $525,000 Scandinavian Championships at Stockholm.

The 23-year-old from Buffalo, N.Y., decided to take a break in mid-September after losing his desire to win.

“I was simply tired of playing tennis,” he said. “I felt I needed a rest.

“But I was excited after winning today. I haven’t been that in a long time.”

In other first-round matches, Sergio Casal of Spain beat Peter Fleming, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, and Richey Reneberg eliminated Sammy Giammalva, 6-4, 6-4.
