Davey Johnson says he would like to stay past next season as New York Mets manager rather than move into the club’s front office, according to Newsday.

Johnson, whose contract expires next season, said he has changed his mind and now wants to be among the list of managerial candidates for beyond 1988.

On Oct. 3, General Manager Frank Cashen announced that Johnson would take a front-office job after the final year of his contract. At the time, Johnson said publicly that he would be happy to take the front-office job.
