Newport Pharmaceuticals International, a Newport Beach-based drug maker, has entered into a supply contract with a Japanese company to manufacture a chemical used in an anti-ulcer product marketed throughout the world.

Newport’s subsidiary in Ireland will manufacture the chemical, which is used in famotidine, a drug marketed by Yamanouchi Ireland Company Ltd. Newport’s Irish subsidiary was previously a manufacture of Isoprinosine, the firm’s proprietary drug, which company officials hope will become a treatment for AIDS.

The Berkeley-based Medical Technology Stock Letter recently reported on the agreement, saying that it “will provide some significant revenue, $5 million to $10 million a year.”
