British Open champion Nick Faldo scored a three-stroke victory over Curtis Strange, the year’s leading money-winner, to lead a team of European pros to a 7-5 win over a U.S. squad Thursday in the first round of the $950,000 World Championship of Golf at Inagi, Japan.

Faldo shot a 70, Strange a 73.

Meanwhile, Greg Norman beat Toru Nakamura, 67-74, as an Australia-New Zealand team tied Japan, 6-6.

This was the first of three days of round-robin play among six-member teams representing the four major Professional Golf Assn. tours. The two best scoring teams from the first three days will meet Sunday for the $360,000 first prize--$60,000 for each team member. The remaining two teams will play for third place.
