COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Georgia Shuts Down Bell and Smith, Beats Florida
For Georgia’s often-criticized defensive secondary, Saturday was a day of redemption.
Ridiculed in a local newspaper as a unit that couldn’t cover their mouths when they coughed, they limited Florida to 162 yards passing in No. 10-ranked Georgia’s 23-10 victory over the No. 17 Gators.
Sophomore cornerback Ben Smith intercepted two Kerwin Bell passes, and the Bulldogs sacked Florida quarterbacks four times to complement a stout Georgia run defense that limited Gator running back Emmitt Smith to 46 yards in 13 carries. Smith entered the game as the nation’s No. 2 rusher with 1,083 yards.
Georgia freshman Rodney Hampton had the biggest numbers with 103 yards in 18 attempts as the Bulldogs controlled the ball for more than 37 minutes.
Georgia (7-2) improved to 4-1 in the Southeast Conference, while the Gators fell to 5-4 and 2-3.
