COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Far West Roundup : Air Force Wins Back Trophy, 27-10

Sophomore Dee Dowis, the nation’s top rushing quarterback, ran for 129 yards in 19 carries at Air Force Academy, Colo., Saturday to help Air Force regain the Commander-in-Chief Trophy with a 27-10 victory over Army.

The trophy, won by Army last year, goes to the team that dominates the other two military academies in football. Air Force beat Navy, 23-13, this season.

Dowis scored on a 3-yard run and set up another touchdown with a 65-yard gain as he increased his season rushing total to 1,163 yards.

Anthony Roberson and Albert Booker both scored on runs of one yard, and Kevin Hughes returned an interception 24 yards for a Falcons’ touchdown.

The victory lifted Air Force to 7-3 this season. Army fell to 3-6.

Wyoming 59, New Mexico 16--At Albuquerque, N.M., Scott Runyan threw a school-record six touchdown passes as the Cowboys beat the winless Lobos to remain atop the Western Athletic Conference race.

Wyoming, 7-2 overall and 5-0 in the WAC, holds a half-game lead over Texas El Paso. New Mexico dropped to 0-8 and 0-6.

Starting in place of the injured Craig Burnett, Runyan, who completed 23 of 39 passes for 385 yards, threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to fullback Steve Bena, 2 yards to Gordy Wood, 1 yard to Bill Hoffman, 14 yards to Scott Gibson, 29 yards to Anthony Sargent and 11 yards to James Loving.

Runyan finished one touchdown shy of the WAC record, held by former Brigham Young quarterbacks Jim McMahon and Marc Wilson.

Texas El Paso 30, Utah 24--John Harvey ran for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns in the rain at Salt Lake City as the Miners handed the Utes their first WAC loss at home to UTEP in 20 years.

The victory improved UTEP’s record to 5-1 in the WAC, 7-2 overall, and kept the Miners in the running for the conference title. The loss dropped the Utes to 2-4, 5-5.

Harvey has rushed for 1,068 yards. The junior tailback scored on runs of 4, 5 and 19 yards.
