Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Police Say Man Shot in Smuggling Dispute

Share

A San Ysidro man was arrested Monday night after Santa Ana police said he shot a man who was trying to arrange an illegal immigration deal.

Police Lt. Robert Chavez said the victim, Miguel Hernandez, 24, of Santa Ana had hired Benjamin Silva, 50, to smuggle a 68-year-old Mexican national from Tijuana to the United States. The original price of the purported deal was $300, Chavez said, but when Silva raised the fee by $50, an argument started outside a parked vehicle in the 2000 block of West Washington Street.

“There was a verbal argument, then the gun came out, and then the shot,” Chavez said.

Hernandez was listed in good condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, while Silva awaited booking at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
