Jail Escapee Leaps From Window, but Doesn’t Get Far

An accused bank robber who is also charged with shooting a police officer was captured Wednesday at the home of his sister in West Los Angeles, 24 hours after escaping from a San Bernardino jail, authorities said.

Although he was surrounded by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies and Upland police, Lee Goins, 30, jumped from a second-floor window and made a run for freedom, but was quickly captured. Sheriff’s deputies said Goins’ girlfriend, Dena Connoley, 32, who was in the house on Cadillac Avenue, was arrested for investigation of harboring a fugitive. The sister was not arrested.

Goins and two other Los Angeles men were charged with attempted murder and bank robbery after Upland Police Officer John Carroll was wounded five times as the three suspects allegedly fled a savings and loan robbery on Oct. 6. One of the shots hit Carroll, 35, in the head, leading to partial paralysis and speech problems.

Two sheriff’s deputies who were working in the county’s Central Detention Facility at the time of Tuesday’s escape were placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, the Sheriff’s Department said. Their names were not released.
