Tennis Roundup : Cash Is Greeted With Success in Opening Round at Wembley

Pat Cash of Australia made a triumphant return to Britain Wednesday.

Cash, who had not played in England since beating Ivan Lendl in the Wimbledon final, defeated Jonas Svensson of Sweden, 7-5, 7-6, in the first round of the $375,000 Benson and Hedges tennis championships at Wembley.

Lendl also made a successful start, beating Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 6-2, 6-1, in a match interrupted for 20 minutes because of rain seeping through a hole in the roof of the Wembley Arena.

They were joined in the second round by Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, who downed Kelly Evernden of New Zealand, 6-2, 6-4.

Advancing to the quarterfinals with second-round wins were Amos Mansdorf of Israel, who outlasted Rick Leach, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2; Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland, who ousted Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden, 7-5, 6-0, and Henri Leconte of France, who eliminated Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 7-6.

At Chicago, 16-year-old Mary Joe Fernandez battled top-seeded Martina Navratilova for a set before losing, 6-4, 6-3, in the second round of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament.

Fernandez broke service twice in the opening set as the first four games were won by the server at love.

Later, 16-year-old Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union upset West German Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, 6-4, 6-2, to gain the quarterfinals.

Brad Gilbert turned back Pavel Vojtisek of West Germany, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, in a first-round match at Frankfurt, West Germany.

Earlier, Tim Mayotte defeated Nduka Odizor of Nigeria, 6-2, 6-2; Christian Bergstrom of Sweden eliminated Jim Grabb, 6-1, 6-4, and Kelly Jones ousted Jim Pugh, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
