The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Thursday reversed the 1982 and 1984 drug and weapons convictions of rock singer David Crosby. In a 5-4 decision, the court said the arresting officer had no legal right to enter Crosby’s private dressing room at Cardi’s, a Dallas nightclub where he was performing. Judge M. P. Duncan’s opinion for the majority said that the officer’s statement at the time of arrest--”I got curious as to whether there was a law being violated or not in there”--wasn’t sufficient reason for the officer, who found Crosby in possession of cocaine, to enter the private room. Crosby was convicted in Dallas of possession of cocaine and unlawfully carrying a handgun in a tavern.
