Local News in Brief : Mobil Cited for Nuisance
- Share via
Mobil Oil Corp. has been cited by the South Coast Air Quality Management District for a public nuisance after gas spewing from its Torrance refinery sparked numerous complaints Wednesday of a strong odor of “rotten eggs.”
The citation carries no penalty, but a decision on whether the AQMD will take civil action or refer the matter to the Los Angeles County district attorney will be made in coming weeks, district spokesman Ron Ketcham said. It is the sixth time in two years that the AQMD has cited Mobil for a public nuisance.
A district inspector theorized that the hydrogen sulfide odor was caused by too much gas going up a stack, where it was not completely burned off.
Thomas Gregory, manager of safety and training at the refinery, said Mobil is investigating the incident.
