Dodgers Can’t Afford Garvey’s Grandstand

Are the Dodgers really in a position to allow themselves to be used as a vehicle for Steve Garvey’s swan-song tour of the National League? The Dodgers already have one foot in the cellar, and they can only hasten their rapid descent by wasting their time, money and roster position on Garvey.

If the Dodgers feel some sense of commitment to Garvey, let them sign him as a quasi-coach, remembering that in 1982, Garvey decided to take the money and run.

Garvey claims that his presence will enable the Dodgers to regain their pride. Pride is usually regained by winning, and I don’t see Garvey contributing much in that area. If Garvey were a coach, his current mediocre level of play would not drag down the already lowly Dodgers. The Dodgers have become notorious for their recent bonehead player decisions. If they sign Garvey, it would only increase their reputation in this area.
