COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Pacific 10 Roundup : Cal Upsets Arizona State, 38-20

Troy Taylor threw three touchdown passes, with the third coming after he suffered a broken finger, to lead California to a 38-20 upset victory over Arizona State in a Pacific 10 game Saturday at Berkeley.

“It’s an expensive victory,” Cal Coach Bruce Snyder said after X-rays provided the bad news about his quarterback. “He’s improved so much this season. He breeds confidence.

“All our offensive players believe they’re going to move the ball every time they break the huddle, and it all starts with Troy.”

Snyder said that team doctors told him the Taylor would miss the final two games for Cal (3-5-1, 2-2-1), against Stanford and Washington State.

But Taylor said: “I’m going to see how it feels on Friday and then make a decision.”

The loss by the Sun Devils (6-4, 3-3) hurt their chances of receiving a bowl bid this season.

Taylor completed 13 consecutive passes in the first half, connecting with tight end Darryl Ingram for 2 touchdowns. He passed for his third touchdown a few minutes after banging the index finger of his passing hand on a helmet early in the second half.

Oregon 31, Washington St. 17--Tailback Derek Loville scored twice and Pete Nelson passed to Terry Obee on an 89-yard touchdown play as the Ducks beat the Cougars at Pullman, Wash.

Nelson completed 6 of 11 passes for 168 yards before being replaced in the third quarter by redshirt freshman Bill Musgrave.

Cougar quarterback Timm Rosenbach completed 19 of 35 passes for 192 yards but threw 4 interceptions. Rosenbach also rushed for 105 yards in 23 carries.

Oregon is 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10. Washington State is 3-6 and 1-4.

Stanford 38, Oregon St. 7--Redshirt freshman Brian Johnson threw touchdown passes of 18 and 16 yards to tight end Jim Price and hooked up with wide receiver Ed McCaffrey on a 49-yard touchdown play at Corvalis, Ore.

Stanford’s Brad Muster rushed for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns before leaving late in the first half with a sore left ankle.

Stanford (4-6, 3-4) is 4-2 since Johnson took over at quarterback in the fifth game of the season. Oregon State fell to 2-8 and 0-6.
