Golfer Severiano Ballesteros of Spain plans to move to Monaco to avoid paying Spanish income tax on prize money won outside the country, a Madrid newspaper said.

The story comes in the wake of reports that the Finance Ministry is beginning a crackdown on professional athletes who do not adequately report their earnings and pay the required tax.

Internal Revenue Director Jose Borrel was quoted as saying an unnamed Spanish golfer in 1986 had “declared earnings of 7,500,000 pesetas ($66,370) when in reality he earned 125 million pesetas ($1.9 million).”
