A suspect in the beating and shooting death of a San Diego check-cashing company owner, whose body was discovered earlier this month with his 20-month-old son asleep next to it, was arrested Monday afternoon in Chula Vista, police reported.

John Edward Mullikin, 26, was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was taken into custody without incident in the 1200 block of 5th Avenue in Chula Vista, according to a police statement.

Mullikin is being held without bail in County Jail.

Stephen Edward Schaefer, 42, was slain early Nov. 1 at his business, the Money Express check-cashing company in the 4200 block of El Cajon Boulevard.

Mullikin, according to police, was a former employee at the business, and police believe robbery was the motive for the killing.

Schaefer’s body was discovered on the floor of the business at 3 a.m. by the business’ assistant manager. Schaefer had last been seen alive when he left his home the day before with his son in tow.
