A 17-year-old San Diego youth was in critical condition Monday after he was struck by a car while running wildly into traffic on busy Westminster Boulevard late Saturday, police said.

Damian Edward LeClair remained hospitalized Monday at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital with a broken neck and two broken legs. Westminster Police Office Larry Woessner said LeClair and several companions were returning from a rock concert in Long Beach when they stopped about 11:30 p.m. near a liquor store on Westminster Boulevard and Hammon Place.

“They pulled over near a liquor store and he (LeClair) goes into traffic and starts kicking passing cars, then jumps on a few hoods. Then he laid down in the No. 2 lane, and he was run over,” Woessner said

The driver of the car was not cited, police said.

LeClair had attended a Grateful Dead concert at the Long Beach Arena where police believe he may have ingested a hallucinogenic drug. Although no violence was reported during the three days the band performed that had attracted thousands of rock fans, Long Beach police did make 79 arrests ranging from public drunkenness to possession of illegal drugs, Long Beach Lt. Richard Ostling said.

Ostling said that the arrests included people in possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms and the psychedelic drug, LSD.
