Local News in Brief : Orange : Dump Site Chosen for New Police Station

Share

After a 16-month search, the City Council has voted to build a new police station on a five-acre dump site at the northwest end of town.

Councilman Don E. Smith cast the only vote against the project, which is located at Struck Avenue and Batavia Street on land already owned by the city.

Smith later said he opposed the site because he feels that the new police facility should be closer to city’s eastern boundary, where most of the growth is expected to occur in the next two decades.

City officials said a new structure is needed because the current headquarters at 300 E. Chapman Ave. are too small to accommodate the department’s 250 employees. Since the building was constructed in 1963, the city’s population has more than doubled from 50,000 to more than 100,000.

The new facility is scheduled for completion in three years. The total cost of the structure has not been determined.
