Local News in Brief : Council to Hear Pier Plan
A long-awaited reconstruction and development plan for the Santa Monica Pier is ready and will go before the City Council next month.
The design guidelines, which have already been approved by three key city commissions, envision a $16.5-million private commercial development of 150,000 square feet of the pier, while the city would spend an additional $7 million over three years to reinforce the pier’s platform and upgrade utilities, sewers, lighting and railings.
Officials at the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corp., the nonprofit agency formed by the city in 1983 to oversee the project, say the plan is aimed at reviving the pier’s “whimsical flavor.”
The officials want the commercial development to include a mix of amusement and entertainment concessions, restaurants and retail stores.
A large section of the wooden pier, a county landmark, was destroyed in winter storms in 1983.
