2 Acid Spills Close Lanes
A four- to five-mile trail of sulfuric acid was discovered on local streets in Carson on Friday--the second such spill that day. Authorities do not know the origin of the spills, which have been cleaned up.
The first spill, discovered at 10:40 a.m., resulted in the closure of the southbound lane of Wilmington Avenue between Carson and Dominguez streets. California Highway Patrol officers also discovered some acid on the southbound San Diego Freeway and closed the Wilmington Avenue on-ramp.
Twelve hours later, authorities discovered another spill, which stretched from the intersection of Carson Street and Wilmington Avenue to Pacific Coast Highway and Alameda Street. The traffic lanes affected were blocked off while the second spill was cleaned up. Sheriff’s deputies said the cleanup ended at 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
