A fleeing Camp Pendleton Marine was shot by National City police Saturday afternoon after officers tried to arrest him in connection with a rape that morning, according to Sgt. Pat McMartin.

Cedric Mason, 25, was shot once in the lower back by detective Gary MacMurry in front of the National City Police Department, McMartin said.

Mason had fled when police tried to take him into custody after he voluntarily came to the station for questioning. The victim ignored a warning shot and repeated commands to stop, police said.

Mason was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was in serious but stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
