COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Big Eight Roundup : Thomas Runs for 293 Yards

Oklahoma State’s Thurman Thomas finished his career in style Saturday.

Thomas carried 30 times for a school-record 293 yards and 4 touchdowns in leading the 13th-ranked, Sun Bowl-bound Cowboys to a 48-27 victory over Iowa State at Stillwater, Okla.

“This game was a fitting end to a great career for Thurman Thomas,” Coach Pat Jones said. “It was very fitting for a great back.”

Thomas has 5,047 career yards, breaking Terry Miller’s school record of 4,754. Thomas’ 293 yards broke Ernest Anderson’s single-game record of 270.

Thomas scored on runs of 58, 9, 1 and 66 yards and set up another touchdown with a 35-yard run as Cowboys finished the regular season 9-2 overall, 5-2 in conference play. Iowa State wound up 3-8 and 2-5.

First-year Iowa State Coach Jim Walden had nothing but praise for his team.

“This is the most fun I think I’ve ever had coaching because this crew gives so much effort,” Walden said. “I think if I ever have 80 guys give the same effort these 40 guys give, we’ll be competitive.”

The Cyclones, who are under National Collegiate Athletic Assn. probation, brought only 45 scholarship players to Stillwater.

Halfback Barry Sanders, who alternated with Thomas, gained 122 yards in 12 carries.

Hart Lee Dykes had 5 catches for 88 yards and wound up with 978 yards to break the Oklahoma State record of 937 yards set in 1970 by Herman Eben.

Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, who completed 10 of 16 passes for 127 yards, became only the second sophomore in Big Eight history to pass for more than 2,000 yards in a season. The other was David Humm of Nebraska in 1972.

Gundy’s 2,106 yards also are the most in a season by an Oklahoma State quarterback, as are his 179 completions.

Colorado 41, Kansas State 0--Erich Kissick’s 42-yard run highlighted a 24-point second quarter for the Buffaloes at Manhattan, Kan.

Five players scored touchdowns for Colorado (7-3, 4-3), which closes out its season next week at home against Nebraska. Kansas State finished 0-10-1 overall and 0-6-1 in conference play.

Tony Jordan rushed for a game-high 106 yards for the Wildcats, whose last victory was against Kansas, 29-12, in 1986.

Missouri 19, Kansas 7--At Columbia, Mo., sophomore Tommie Stowers rushed for a career-high 130 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers ended a four-game losing streak.

Missouri finished its fourth consecutive losing season at 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big Eight.

Kansas, winless in its last 16 games against Division I-A teams, finished at 1-9-1 and 0-6-1. Stowers, who carried the ball 22 times, topped his previous career high of 101 yards set this year against Indiana.
