Bad INS Experience

Share

Marilyn French’s letter of Nov. 1 concerning rude officials at the Bradley Terminal at LAX reflected a similar experience on Oct. 28 when my wife and I returned from Japan, where we had been treated with unfailing politeness and courtesy by everyone from bus drivers to policemen.

The first passport check for passengers arriving on Singapore Airlines flight 12 was manned by an INS officer so abrasive and arrogant that I was ashamed of being an American. His bullying and shouting at Asian passengers, that I paused in disbelief to observe, could only be described as racist.

Later, in the customs hall, I asked a woman official to show me which carrousel was being used for our flight. Her reply? “Try reading the TV monitor.”

If I had been treated like that on arrival in Tokyo my vacation could have been ruined.
