PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS
The Los Angeles Police Department has recorded 1,727 serious and fatal accidents involving pedestrians from the start of 1986 through Nov. 12, 1987. An accident is defined as serious if it requires hospitalization. In 913 (53%) of the accidents, the drivers were at fault, while pedestrians caused 814 (47%) of the accidents. Of the accidents caused by pedestrians, the vast majority--703--involved jaywalking.

Six intersections had more than one serious or fatal accident during the 21-month period, all involving jaywalkers. The greatest number of these accidents were reported at an intersection adjoining Will Rogers State Beach.
